Amazon Web Services may keep charging you because some AWS resources are still active in your account. Closing your website or stopping a server does not always remove every paid service.
Your Free AWS Usage Has Ended
Many users believe the AWS Free Tier provides unlimited free hosting. However, free offers have time, credit, and usage limits. Charges can begin when you upgrade to a paid plan, use all your credits, or go beyond the allowed limits.
Stopped Servers Can Still Create Costs
Stopping an Amazon EC2 instance normally stops its computing charge. However, attached Amazon EBS storage volumes remain saved, so AWS may continue charging for storage. You must delete unused volumes if you no longer need their data.
Other possible charges may come from:
Amazon S3 storage
EBS volumes and snapshots
Databases
Backups
Data transfer
AWS Marketplace subscriptions
Public IPv4 addresses
AWS charges for public IPv4 addresses, including addresses connected to running resources and unused Elastic IP addresses.
How Can You Stop AWS Charges?
Open the AWS Billing and Cost Management dashboard and select “Bills.” This section shows which service and AWS Region created each charge.
Next, check every AWS Region for active resources. Terminate unused EC2 instances, delete unnecessary storage volumes and snapshots, release public IP addresses, and cancel unwanted Marketplace subscriptions. Remember that stopping a service is not always the same as deleting it.
You should also create an AWS billing alert or budget notification. It can warn you when your estimated bill passes a selected amount.
If you still cannot understand a charge, contact AWS Billing Support and request help reviewing your account. AWS keeps charging when paid resources remain active, so regularly checking your billing dashboard is the best way to avoid unexpected costs.
